Introduction

In any setting, progress is hinged on successful collaboration and productive team dynamics. The challenge often lies in harmonizing differing perspectives and objectives. In this post I’d like us to explore how we can lead change effectively by focusing on our circle of influence, rather than expecting others to change their behavior.

Understanding Blame: Shifting Responsibility

“A man can fail many times, but he isn’t a failure until he begins to blame somebody else.” — John Burroughs

It’s human nature to shift responsibility and blame others when things don’t go as planned. This behavior is often a response to cognitive dissonance, the discomfort we experience when our actions contradict our beliefs. To maintain our self-image and feel competent, we may externalize problems, putting the blame on others.

In environments with insufficient communication, unclear accountability, and lack of mutual understanding, the blame game thrives. Team members may perceive issues as someone else’s fault, especially when they don’t fully understand their roles and responsibilities.

However, pointing fingers doesn’t resolve problems. It hinders growth, collaboration, and problem-solving.

So, how can we foster a healthier, more productive team environment?

Leading Change: Focusing on Your Circle of Influence

The solution lies in a concept from change management: The Circle of Influence. Introduced by Stephen R. Covey in his book “The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People”, the Circle of Influence refers to the areas that we can control.

In team settings, it’s crucial to focus on what can be controlled within each individual’s or subgroup’s Circle of Influence, rather than expecting others to change their behavior.

Understand and Respect Each Other’s Perspectives

The first step is understanding and respecting each other’s roles and challenges. This mutual recognition fosters a respectful team environment.

Shared Vision and Goals

A shared vision and common goals act as a unifying force. These goals could range from completing a project to building a supportive work culture. When a shared vision is in place, everyone understands their role within the larger picture.

Improve Communication

Clear and concise communication is key to avoid misunderstandings. Regular team meetings, open discussions, and constructive feedback can improve communication significantly.

Foster a Culture of Learning and Collaboration

An environment where learning from mistakes is encouraged can foster collaboration. It’s vital to create a space where team members feel comfortable sharing their ideas, discussing concerns, and learning from each other.

Conclusion

In closing, focusing on the Circle of Influence encourages individuals to be proactive, initiate positive change, and promote accountability and respect.

This change can turn team dynamics from a clash of differing agendas into a space for shared growth.
